It’s just you and the machine you’re competing against.

Video Poker is considered a game for all different playing levels. No matter if you’re a beginner or a professional, as long as you know how to play Poker, your good. The objective is similar to Poker where you need to try to get the strongest hand from the five cards you’ve been dealt, with the option to discard all of them. Your payout win amount is dependent upon the ultimate value of your hand.

Unlike your ordinary slot machines, this game requires more skill than luck as you need to decide which card(s) you would like to hold and/or discard, the amount of hands you want to play as well as your bet amount. In that case, we’ll be going over a Video Poker basic strategy that can definitely improve your gaming experience.

Video Poker Betting Strategy: What you need to know

There are many different strategies for Video Poker, especially since there’s different variations of the game. Instead of going over each strategy for each variation, we’ll be focusing specifically on a Video Poker betting strategy for Deuces Wild.

This is a very popular version, if not, the most popular. Similar to the classic Five Card Poker, the ultimate goal is to try and get the strongest poker hand from a standard deck of 52 cards. One of the major differences in this version is that the Deuces count as Wilds, which can substitute for any card making them the most valuable. For example, if you have three 10s and a Deuce, the Deuce will automatically turn into a 10, making your hand a four of a kind (four 10s).

Before we discuss the strategy, below are the rankings for each hand, starting from lowest to highest.

  • Three of Kind

A hand that has three cards with the same rank, while the other two cards have nothing to do with them. For example, three Kings, 5 and a 7.

  • Straight

A hand with consecutive cards. For example, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10.

  • Flush

A hand where all the cards have the same suit as each other, i.e. hearts, clubs, diamonds or spades.

  • Full House

A pair of cards as well as a three of a kind. For example, three Qs and two Js.

  • Four of a Kind

A hand that has four cards with the same rank, while the other card has nothing to do with them. For example, four Qs and a 3.

  • Straight Flush

A hand that is both a straight and a flush. For example, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 – with all of them having the same suit.

  • Five of a Kind

A hand that has five cards with the same rank. For example, five As.

  • Wild Royal Flush

A Royal Flush that contains at least one Deuce (wild card). For example, 10, J, Q, K, 2 – all having the same suit.

  • Four Deuces

A hand that has four Deuce cards (Wild Cards) and one non Deuce

  • Natural Royal Flush

A Royal Flush that does not contain any Deuces (Wild Cards). For example, 10, J, Q, K, A – all having the same suit.

Two things you need to remember when playing Video Poker is:

  • Keep Your Deuces

One extremely important tip is to never discard any Deuces that you’ve been dealt. Sure this may sound easy to remember; however, it can be easily forgotten as the Deuce for most card games is the lowest value.

  • Aim for a Royal Flush

For each hand you’ve been dealt, play as if you’re trying to get a Royal Flush. For example, if you’ve been dealt three cards that are part of a Royal Flush, go ahead and discard the other two to try and complete it. For scenarios where you’re dealt five cards you can’t do anything with, go ahead and discard all five of them.

Learning this basic strategy can improve your game play and lower the casino’s house edge, which can range anywhere from .25% to 5%. However, before you jump onto a table and start gambling, make sure you fully understand all the rules and get some practice. If performed correctly, you have a greater chance of winning than you did before, however keep in mind this strategy as well as any others out there does not guarantee any wins.
